Hi-ho, hi-ho, it’s off to work I go!
Don’t you just hate it when something you are doing goes horribly wrong and you have to spend even more time sorting it out?
I had to install the new DotNet Framework v 1.1 onto one of the servers at work tonight. It is a server that gets a fair amount of use through the working day and evening so it had to be done fairly late at night. When the framework was installed (along with a few outstanding security updates) the ominous “You must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect” window appeared. Knowing that the server was not under any real load at this point in time I hit the restart now button.
My VNC session was terminated almost instantly. I started a ping to the server so I could see when it restarted. It didnt drop a single ping for half an hour. Not fair. This meant that I had to go and drive into work and see what the hell was going on.
I’ve gotten into work to find that one of the in house utility applications that runs on this server is waiting to be shutdown. The damn thing wouldn’t shutdown automatically and for some reason windows wouldn’t kill it. Not happy jan. At least it was an easy to sort out problem and I could bounce the server manually.
I will need to remember in future to close all the running applications on the box before I try to bounce it.
