Full Steam Ahead

I’ve finally given into my desire to play HL2 and CS:Source and have just created a steam account and purchased them. I chose the Silver pack for USD$60 so that I also get Day Of Defeat when it gets released on September 26th.

As I type this my computer is busily downloading HL2 at close to 1Mb/sec. I find it amusing that Internode have an advertising banner on the bottom of the Steam Monitor that tells me how fast the download is going.

Hopefully it will be done in time for the games that I am supposed to be joining in tonight :)

Too Wired!

I’ve had a few problems recently with a sore back and neck. I’ve finally been able to get in to see the Osteopath and I feel a lot better already. I still have to go back for a few more sessions, but if the improvements keep coming like they did today I will be very happy.

Unfortunately the Osteopath has given me the reason for my current pain. I’m too wired! Or, more correctly - my body is too tense from all the stimulants that I consume. I’ve been told that I need to cut back on all the coke and redbull that I drink. Problem is that I am a geek. And every geek knows that coke, redbull, etc - caffeine - are staples for a geek. A geek without caffeine is like, well, a geek without caffeine. We need our caffeine.

This is going to be an interesting challenge.

Action stations!

An interesting article about the Six Dumbest Ideas in Computer Security turned up on Slashdot this morning and it was an interesting read.

I had to laugh when I got to point #6 Action is Better Than Inaction. It so accurately describes the upper management where I work. In the case of us programmers, if management dont see us with our heads over the keyboard furiously tapping away they think we are not working.

I don’t know how common this is, but it is something that really frustrates me about my workplace. I work with some very smart people and we often spend a lot of time discussing things before just jumping in and tapping out some code. Unfortunatley it is difficult to impress upon management that this is us working and not just bludging.

Four small steps

It’s been a while since I last posted anything here, and quite a bit has happened since my last entry. The biggest and most exciting, for me at least, was last Saturday when Kira took her first steps. We were at a friends place, having been to their daughters first birthday that day and Kira amazed us all.

I was very happy to have been there to see it, even more so that I could share that with Stacey. Kira pulled herself up onto her feet using the lounge, then cruised along it a little. After picking up a toy in each hand, Kira looked at them both as if to say “What do I do now?” and then proceeded to take 4 quick unassisted steps before plonking down on her bum.

So far these are the only such steps that Kira has taken, but we know that when she is ready she will be walking more frequently.
